About the Event
Celebrate Black History Month at the Barn with a special program on the "race" films produced by Norman Studios during the 1920s. The Flying Ace, the studio's only film to survive in its entirety, will be screened following a presentation by historian Barbara C. Wingo. This is a rare opportunity to view a film starring an African-American cast in an aviation epic!
The Hollywood Heritage Museum presents an Evening@TheBarn with a program on the Jacksonville, Florida-based Norman Studios. Starting in 1907, Jacksonville was the "Winter Film Capitol of the world" and home to studios such as Kalem and Eagle Film City (which would later become the Norman Studios). Headed by Richard E. Norman, an inventor, soft drink manufacturer, and filmmaker. Richard would become one of the leading manufacturers of motion pictures for the African-American market until the introduction of sound.
Historian Barbara C. Wingo shares the history of this unique landmark in photos and film clips and speaks of the progress of the reunification of the two parts of the studio complex into a single and complete historic movie studio. Following the presentation, there will be a screening of The Flying Ace, the only complete Norman Studios film known to exist.
Barbara C. Wingo is a lawyer and an education consultant who has served on the board of directors for the Norman Studios since 2016 and is active in numerous preservation projects in the state of Florida.
